Beginning of Winter, one of the 24 solar terms in China, usually arrives around November 7th or 8th each year. It marks the official start of the winter season.
When Beginning of Winter comes, the weather changes significantly. The temperature drops rapidly. In the northern regions, cold air becomes more active. There may be early frosts, and in some areas, snow begins to fall. The landscapes are gradually covered with a layer of white, creating a beautiful yet chilly scene. In the southern areas, although it may not be as cold as in the north, people can still clearly feel the coolness in the air. The rainfall decreases, and the humidity also tends to decline.
There are various traditional customs associated with this solar term. In the north of China, having dumplings is a very popular custom. In Shaoxing, there is a traditional custom of brewing yellow rice wine starting from this day. In the southern part of the country, people usually have the custom of "tonifying in winter". They eat warm and nourishing foods such as chicken, duck, and fish.
