A woman from northwest China, surnamed Li, has made headlines after giving birth to twins, one from each of her two uteruses, a rare medical condition affecting only 0.3% of women globally. Li, who was eight and a half months pregnant, delivered a boy and a girl in early September at Xi'an No. 4 Hospital in Shaanxi province.
Li’s condition, known as uterine didelphys, is incredibly rare, and the chances of successfully delivering children from both wombs are even lower. Dr. Cai Ying, a senior obstetrician at the hospital, described Li's case as “one in a million,” stating, “We’ve only heard of a few cases like this in China and abroad.”
Typically, women with two uteruses face high risks during pregnancy, including frequent miscarriages, premature births, and other complications. Li herself had experienced a miscarriage in a previous pregnancy at 27 weeks. After becoming pregnant again in January, doctors developed a comprehensive plan to monitor her closely throughout the pregnancy to ensure her and the babies' safety.
Both babies were delivered healthy via caesarean section, with the boy weighing 3.3kg and the girl 2.4kg. Li and her newborns were discharged from the hospital just four days after the birth.
The news of this rare birth quickly spread across Chinese social media, sparking widespread reactions. One netizen humorously remarked, "The babies lived a luxurious life inside their mother’s belly - each had their own villa rather than sharing a single home." However, others emphasized the challenges of the pregnancy, with one person noting, “My colleague also has two uteruses and lost three babies before successfully having a child.”
