Notice

The 43rd Public Forum for Engineering Management will focus on " Sustainable Transportation Systems" and will take place on June 14th, 2024, from 15:30-17:00 pm (CST) via Zoom Meeting (ID: 884 6483 5084, Code: 0614). The forum is organized by the Frontiers of Engineering Management and the School of Management at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. 

Dr. Wen-Long ShangSenior Research Fellow, Imperial College London, will host the forum, and we have invited two experts in the field to share their research on this important topic: Ed Manley, Pro-Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Environment, University of LeedsTim Schwanen, Director of the Transport Studies Unit, University of Oxford.

We welcome all teachers and students who are interested in this subject to join us for what promises to be an informative and engaging event.

Introduction of Keynote Speakers


Ed ManleyEd Manley is Professor of Urban Analytics and Pro Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Environment at University of Leeds, and Honorary Professor at UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA). He is Co-Director of the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre, and involved in several interdisciplinary research projects. In 2022, he won the Leverhulme Trust's Philip Leverhulme Prize for Geography. His research focuses on mobility behaviour in the contexts of health and sustainability, and agent-based simulation.

【Abstract

This talk will explore how the emerging toolbox of urban analytics can be used to support urban development. First, it addresses the production of robust models of cities, that enable production of evidence for creating urban change. It considers how we can understanding and capture the diverse influences on human decision-makers during their daily lives, and how decisions culminate in emergent properties of urban systems. Second, it will consider the potential of new forms of mobility data and machine learning methods, to provide evidence of changes in human behaviour and behaviour change at scale. The talk will explore the significant opportunity for these data to help understand urban systems in ways far beyond their original design or intention, including case studies relating to health and sustainability.




Tim Schwanen, Tim is Director of the Transport Studies Unit, Professor of Transport Geography in the School of Geography and the Environment, and also a Supernumerary Fellow at St Anne's College. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Human Geography and Planning of Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2003 (cum laude), after which he worked as a post-doctoral researcher and Lecturer in Urban Geography at the same university. Tim joined the University of Oxford in March 2009, first as a Research Fellow at the TSU and later as Departmental Lecturer in Transport Studies and Human Geography. He has fulfilled the TSU Director role since September 2015 and was the Fellow in Geography at St Anne's College in 2015-2021. Tim was a Visiting Professor in Human Geography at the School of Business, Economics and Law of the University of Gothenburg in 2016-2019, and held a Francqui Chair at the Faculty of Sciences in Ghent University in 2022. Since September 2021 he has been a Fellow of the Academy for Social Sciences, the UK's national academy for academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences.


【Abstract

Questions of equity and justice have become paramount in transportation research and are now one of the most widely examined concerns in the field. Traditionally, the focus has been on equity and the distribution of the costs and benefits of transportation systems and policies. However, more comprehensive understandings of transportation and mobility justice are becoming increasingly influential. This presentation will provide an overview of those understandings, and discuss implications for transport policies and research that seek to accelerate the electrification of vehicle fleets and encourage the uptake of cycling and walking.


Introduction of Moderator


Dr. Wen-Long Shang (Ph.D., DIC, IEEE Senior Member) is currently a Senior Research Fellow of Imperial College London. He has received the PhD degree from the Centre for Transport Studies, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London. So far, he has already published more than 90 academic articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, serves as Associate Editors/Members of Editorial Board for many international academic journals, and is the reviewer of more than 80 journals, conferences and research foundations. He has participated in National Key Project and the EU 7th Framework Project, and currently is in charge of or participates more than 10 research projects. His research interests include: intelligent transport system, resilience of transport systems, energy conservation and emission reduction of transport systems, traffic big data, and smart city.

Frontiers of Engineering Management

Frontiers of Engineering Management (FEM) is a quarterly research journal that is supervised by the Chinese Academy of Engineering and administered jointly by Higher Education Press, Tsinghua University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It is published in English, both in print and online, and is designed to provide an international platform for academicians, researchers, professionals, and practitioners in the broad field of engineering management to share knowledge in the form of research articles, reviews, comments, and super engineering.
FEM is organized in an international dimension and strives to promote the advancement of the science of engineering management, improve the practice of engineering management, and prepare practitioners and researchers in the field. With its high-quality contributions, FEM plays an important role in fostering collaborations and advancing the state of the art in engineering management.


Online Public Forum for Engineering Management

Since the end of 2020, the Frontiers of Engineering Management editorial office has launched a series of successful Online Public Forums for Engineering Management, which have attracted many researchers from across China. These forums feature keynote speeches from academicians, renowned experts, and authors of FEM, both from China and abroad.
As a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration, the Online Public Forum for Engineering Management has been an important part of FEM's efforts to promote the advancement of the science and practice of engineering management. Through these events, FEM has helped to connect researchers, practitioners, and experts in the field, and to provide valuable insights into the latest research and trends in engineering management.
