《牛津英语词典》的“长征”
The retreat of Chinese Communist forces from Kuomintang (Nationalist) troops in 1934–5 from south-eastern to north-western China, over a distance of 6000 miles (c. 9600 km).
At the outset, 100,000 people left the Communist rural base in Jiangxi Province in October 1934; approx. 20,000 survived to reach Shaanxi Province in October 1935 under the leadership of Mao Zedong. Despite these losses, the retreat ensured the survival of the Communists and made possible their ultimate victory over the Kuomintang in 1949.
The historic Long March of 6,000 miles, in which they crossed twelve provinces of China and triumphantly emerged at last into a powerful new base in the Northwest.
There was never again a question, after the Long March, about the real leader of Chinese Communism. It was Mao.
The Long March meant the Nationalists killed two and a half million.
Mr Chou held a number of important posts and travelled widely before the Long march.
The photograph of him after the Long March shows a prematurely aged man with shrivelled gums.
Li lost her young son during the Long March.
