A man in Changzhi City, Shanxi Province, has been detained after fabricating a fake "wanted notice" for himself and posting it online, leading to significant social disruption.
The man, identified as Wang Yibo, claimed on social media that he was armed with an assault rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition. He falsely stated that he had blackmailed a company for 30 million yuan (about $4.14 million) and offered a 30,000-yuan ($4,140) reward for his capture.
The local police's internet security unit discovered the post during routine online monitoring and launched an investigation. Tracing the online activity, they identified Wang and detained him. Upon searching his residence, the police found no evidence of firearms or other prohibited items.
When questioned, Wang admitted he fabricated the story out of boredom and frustration with his daily life. Despite being a hoax, the video caused significant social disruption, amassing 350,000 views, 2,459 likes, 799 favorites, 80 comments, and 1,155 reposts before Wang’s detention.
Authorities emphasized the severe consequences of spreading false information online, stating that Wang's actions had wasted police resources and disrupted public order. He is now under investigation for intentionally spreading false information and causing social disruption.
