A 27-year-old woman from Tianjin tragically passed away 10 days after undergoing laser treatments for spot and birthmark removal.
The woman, identified by her surname Liu, suffered from neurofibromatosis and café-au-lait spots, which led her to seek multiple freckle removal procedures. She had undergone nine laser sessions at Jinmen Dermatology Hospital, a private clinic, spending over 100,000 yuan (US$14,000). However, her symptoms reportedly worsened after each treatment.
According to Liu’s mother, her daughter had previously paused the procedures due to severe pain caused by uneven application of anaesthetic cream. On October 21, during her 10th session, Liu experienced dizziness after the anaesthetic was applied. Despite doctors immediately removing the cream, she went into shock, convulsed, and suffered cardiac arrest. Emergency services transported her to another hospital, but she succumbed to complications from excessive intracranial pressure 10 days later.
Liu’s husband suspects that an overdose of anaesthetic triggered an allergic reaction, ultimately causing her death. Jinmen Dermatology Hospital, however, defended its practices, claiming that the anaesthetic was applied in accordance with standard protocols and allergy tests were available upon request. Zhang, the hospital director, expressed regret over the incident, stating, “We will take full responsibility if found at fault.”
This tragic case has sparked heated discussions on social media, with related topics garnering over 58 million views on Weibo.
One Weibo user, claiming to be Liu’s friend, accused the clinic of lacking proper emergency care, which could have saved Liu during a critical window. Another user commented, “If Liu hadn’t undergone the surgery, this tragedy might not have happened. Health should always take precedence over beauty.”
Others defended Liu’s decision, pointing out the emotional toll of her condition. “Café-au-lait spots don’t just affect appearance; they deeply impact mental health. The real issue lies with the hospital’s care,” one commenter said.
