A 25-year-old woman from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, who was pregnant with nine embryos, chose to undergo a medical procedure to reduce the number to two to protect her health and ensure the well-being of the remaining babies.
The woman, surnamed Hou, had struggled with infertility for years before successfully conceiving in October after undergoing ovulation-boosting treatment. Initial tests revealed she was expecting triplets, but a later examination showed nine embryos clustered in her uterine cavity, all with detectable heartbeats.
Hou's husband shared in a video that doctors recommended reducing the number of embryos due to the physical strain on Hou's body and potential risks associated with carrying so many fetuses. The couple also considered the financial and developmental challenges of raising nine children, leading them to agree to reduce the number of embryos.
The procedure involves significant risks, requiring multiple surgeries due to the high number of embryos and the complexity of the situation. Hou's husband explained that the reduction will take place in two stages. In the first phase, doctors will remove four embryos, followed by a second procedure to remove three more, depending on the results of follow-up health assessments.
Medical professionals are approaching the case with caution, as such procedures are rare and require precise execution to avoid complications for the mother and the remaining embryos.
