A man and woman hiding bundles of fentanyl inside their bodies were arrested at an El Paso port of entry, authorities said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested the man and woman as they were attempting to cross from Mexico into the U.S. after midnight on Nov. 17 through the pedestrian lanes at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing in South El Paso, CBP officials said.

Officers selected the 33-year-old man and 47-year-old woman, both U.S. citizens, for secondary inspection. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the presence of narcotics. The names of the suspects were not released.

The woman removed a bundle of fentanyl that had been concealed within a body cavity, officials said. The bundle contained 3.1 ounces of fentanyl.

Officers found the man hiding a package of fentanyl inside one of his bodily cavities, officials said. The package contained 4.2 ounces of fentanyl.

The man and woman were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations agents in connection with the failed drug-smuggling attempt.

Officers made several seizures since Nov. 16 at El Paso-area ports of entry, including 103 pounds of methamphetamine.

Along with the meth, officers also seized a "small amount of marijuana" and confiscated more than 3,500 units of prescription medications, as well as several veterinary medications, officials said.

Officers arrested four National Crime Information Center fugitives over the weekend. The officers also "intercepted prohibited food products arriving from Mexico," officials said.
