Pineapple on pizza might seem tame compared to Pizza Hut China’s latest offering — a pizza topped with an entire deep-fried bullfrog.
The unconventional creation, announced on Pizza Hut China’s official WeChat account on November 18, is part of a collaboration with Tencent to promote the video game Dungeon and Fighter: Origins. Dubbed the “Goblin Pizza,” the dish launched nationwide on Thursday and will be available until December 19, priced at 169 yuan ($23).
The pizza features a striking presentation: a whole bullfrog, deep-fried to a golden crisp, rests on a bed of coriander, while hard-boiled egg halves and black olives are positioned to mimic "eyes." Frog legs, long considered a culinary staple in southern China dating back to the 1st century, round out the pizza’s bold design.
Unsurprisingly, the Goblin Pizza has generated significant buzz on Chinese social media, with many netizens amused by its daring concept. “This feels like it’s straight out of a fantasy game,” one user commented, nodding to the video game-inspired theme. Another joked, “This pizza should come with a bravery certificate for anyone who finishes it!”
Others viewed the creation as a nod to southern Chinese cuisine, where frog legs are a beloved delicacy. “It’s actually not that strange if you think about it,” one user remarked. “Frog legs are delicious — maybe they’re just modernizing an old tradition.”
