Confessing love can be a nerve-wracking experience, and people often go to great lengths to make it memorable. From romantic dinners to rose petals, such gestures are intended to win hearts. However, a university student in Vietnam took an unconventional - and unsettling - approach that backfired spectacularly.
Duong Minh Hieu, a third-year student at Hanoi University of Industry, had secretly admired a female classmate for four years. Hoping to impress her, he decided that a traditional confession wouldn’t suffice and opted for a shocking method: arranging 38 live cockroaches to spell out "I love U."
Hieu began his plan by setting traps in his home, capturing approximately 40 cockroaches over the course of a day. Once he returned from school, he attempted to line up the roaches on the floor to form the romantic message. However, the insects kept moving, making it difficult to create the desired arrangement. To solve this, Hieu sprayed insecticide to immobilize the cockroaches, ensuring they “stayed in place.”
Proud of his work, Hieu recorded a video of the wriggling roach formation, set to the sentimental song "I love you, I need you." He sent the video to his crush, hoping for a positive response. Unfortunately, his efforts were met with outright rejection. His would-be girlfriend made it clear that she had no interest, leaving Hieu single and disheartened.
Undeterred, Hieu uploaded the video to social media, where it quickly went viral across Southeast Asia. While his unique confession attracted attention, it also sparked widespread criticism and disgust from netizens.
The clip, which showed some cockroaches still twitching and struggling to move, drew horrified responses. One user commented, “No girl would ever say yes to this!” Another wrote, “Killing so many creatures just for a confession? This is horrifying.”
Many viewers found the act repulsive, with comments like, “This is not romantic; it’s a nightmare,” and “Even if there were no other men on Earth, I wouldn’t date someone who confesses with cockroaches.” Some even joked that they needed therapy after watching the video.
