Background and Motivations
In contemporary society, people's awareness is constantly increasing, highlighting the importance of recycling and reusing industrial waste materials. This practice is crucial for enhancing the resilience of industrial circular systems, promoting the circular economy, and achieving net-zero emissions goals.
Effective industrial symbiosis will be able to:
Reduce the use of raw materials and associated costs and carbon impacts.
Transfer resources through waste hierarchies, increasing their beneficial use and promoting the circular economy.
Facilitate the transition of industries to the circular economy, promoting good practices and cross-sector communication.
However, at the same time, it also faces challenges such as high costs, limitations in technological feasibility, rising energy demands, complexity in technological implementation, inadequate regulatory policies, and technological risks.
To address these challenges, research on industrial symbiosis has gained increasing attention and investment in today's era.
This special issue “Industrial symbiosis and zero emissions: Industrial waste management practices for achieving sustainable environment” will focus on collaborating with stakeholders from various sectors to develop the best practice roadmap, promote the advancement and application of industrial symbiosis technologies, and provide feasible solutions to achieve net-zero emissions goals. Such a roadmap will provide guidance for all stakeholders, helping them understand, accept, and practice waste recycling and reuse, and providing actionable steps to achieve this goal, promoting the development of the circular economy.
Manuscript submission information:
When submitting your manuscript please select the article type “VSI: Ind. symbiosis & zero: Eco.". Please submit your manuscript before the submission deadline of Feb. 26th, 2025.
All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Once your manuscript is accepted, it will go into production and will be simultaneously published in the current regular issue and pulled into the online Special Issue. Articles from this Special Issue will appear in different regular issues of the journal, though they will be clearly marked and branded as Special Issue articles.
Please ensure you read the Guide for Authors before writing your manuscript. The Guide for Authors and the link to submit your manuscript is available on the Journal’s homepage (at Journal of Environmental Management - Journal - Elsevier).
