About our professor
Dr. Richard W. Carney
Associate Professor and Head of the Global Studies Division
Chinese University of Hong Kong
Dr. Richard W. Carney is Associate Professor and Head of the Global Studies Division at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzhen. His teaching and research interests primarily focus on business-government relations. An advisor and consultant to the World Bank, Carney is the author of Authoritarian Capitalism(Cambridge University Press, 2018) which won the Ohira Memorial Prize. His subsequent book, China’s Chance to Lead(Cambridge University Press, 2023), examines how China is acquiring global influence via infrastructure development and digitalization.
Prior to joining CUHK, he taught at CEIBS where he was recognized for his teaching excellence by the GEMBA program. Carney has also taught senior-level policymakers at the Australian National University and at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He was born in Canada and received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego.
