Two XMUM Academics Honored at Private Education Excellence Awards 2024
Two academic staff from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia, have been recognized with honors at the Private Education Excellence Awards 2024, hosted by Private Education Cooperative of Malaysia (Educoop).
Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon, an Associate Professor and Head of the PhD Programme at Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, was awarded “National Outstanding Young Researcher” for his dedication to achieving transformative resilience in climate sustainability by advancing the complex understanding of the environment-economic-social nexus.
Meanwhile, Ir. Dr. Wong Voon Loong, an Assistant Professor at Department of Chemical Engineering, received the award of “National Outstanding Young Educator (Merit)” for his research innovation and teaching excellence.
“It is privileged to be recognized for my research achievements during my academic career at Xiamen University Malaysia. Thanks to my family, colleagues, collaborators, and students who helped me achieve this,” Ts. Dr Vincent Woon Kok Sin expressed his gratitude.
“I am incredibly grateful for this honour. This recognition represents the collective efforts and shared commitment of my colleagues, students, and mentors. I am grateful for the inspiration and support from everyone who has been part of my academic journey,” Ir. Dr. Wong Voon Loong shared his appreciation.
Held on 1 August 2024, the event aims to recognize outstanding private educators from all private institutions in Malaysia under the categories of teaching, science, arts and design, engineering, research and innovation, and humanities.
This is the fourth time Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) faculty members have won the Private Education Excellence Awards. Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Haw Choon Yian received the “National Outstanding Young Educator” in 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Swee Tiam and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun were honored as “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Young Researcher” in 2022, while Prof. Huang Nay Ming and Assoc. Prof. Ong Wee Jun received the “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Reviewer” in 2019.
Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin is an Associate Professor and Head of the PhD Programme at Department of New Energy Science and Engineering. Named a 2023 Class of Influential Researcher by the I&ECR American Chemical Society, his research work has been featured in Future Earth, The Guardian, and Anthropocene Magazine. He holds numerous fellowships and awards from prestigious organizations, including HKPFS, GDN, and Fulbright YSEALI.
Ir. Dr. Wong Voon Loong is an Assistant Professor at Department of Chemical Engineering, focusing on functional materials, environmental science, and 3D printing. He is a Chartered Member of IChemE (UK), a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council (UK), and a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, United Kingdom) for teaching and learning.
