SPURS Gallery is pleased to announce its second collaboration with the Yale MFA Painting & Printmaking program, presenting “They Stole the Sweet Away—Yale MFA Painting & Printmaking Class of 2024” on August 31, 2024, featuring painting, printmaking, video, and installation works from 16 artists from the graduating class. The exhibition dives into the critical and spiritual thinking of a new generation of artists who confront today's complex social reality with unique perspectives and exceptional sensibilities.

About the artists

Adam Amram (b. 1994 Haifa, Israel) is primarily a painter, whose process is fundamentally rooted in drawing. His interest lies in discovering moments in reality that offer a portal into the realm of the unconscious. Many of his paintings contain a distorted perspective, creating a distilled, uncomfortable sense of closeness to the subject at hand. Through dynamic color relationships and playfully animated forms, Amram’s paintings explore the imagination and its power to transcend the familiar, and generate magic in the mundane.

Adam Amram earned a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016, and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2024. His work has been exhibited most recently at David Castillo Gallery, (Miami, Florida), Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (Atlanta, Georgia); Mother Gallery (Beacon, New York); The de Young Fine Arts Museum (San Francisco, California); Works On Paper Gallery (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); Harpy (Rutherford, New Jersey/ Brooklyn, New York); Melanie Flood Projects + Adams and Ollman Gallery (Portland, Oregon); Redsort (Baltimore, Maryland).

Creighton Baxter (b. 1990, Arizona, USA) is an artist who transforms images and gestures through repetition. Baxter has been a contributing writer and her poetry examining sainthood and the flesh have been published by Telematic Media Arts in Leila Weefur’s “PLAY † PREY”. As a performer, her practice often includes collaborative behavior—working as a writer, actor and visual artist in projects by Raphael Montañez Ortiz, Jarbas Lopez, Matt Savitsky and Miller Robinson among others. For many years, she worked in the performance collective The Highest Closet and is now a collective member of What Would an HIV Doula Do.

Creighton Baxter received her BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in 2013 and her MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2024. She has created commissioned works for Boston University, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and Rhizome, and has participated in exhibitions and programs at Tom of Finland Foundation, Visual Arts Center at UT Austin, and Allen Memorial Art Museum.

His work has been exhibited at Bunker Projects (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), The School House (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Late Space (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Liminal vacant space (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Yossi Milo (New York), Mattress Factory Museum (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Da Vinci Art Alliance (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Les Idees Gallerie (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

Lauren Klotzman (b. Victoria, Texas, USA) is an interdisciplinary art practitioner. Their work examines histories of computing, the geology of media, and the nature of the screen via expanded notions of painting, textile production, and lensless video techniques.

Lauren Klotzman earned a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Sarah Lawrence College in 2012, a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from Harvard University Extension School in 2019, and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2024. They have exhibited internationally and have published with Hyperallergic, TROLLTHREAD, Baest Journal, Boston Art Review, and The Operating System, among others.

Louise Mandumbwa (b. 1996 Francistown, Botswana) explores ideations of home from her perspective as the daughter and granddaughter of intra-continental immigrants from Zambia, Angola, and the Congo, in addition to her experience as an immigrant herself in the US. Through the gestures of painting, drawing and printmaking her practice contends with the gaps in knowledge that are often part of a diasporic experience by engaging a constellation of epistemologies.

Louise Mandumbwa received an AAS from University of Arkansas at Pulaski Tech in 2017, a BFA in Painting from University of Central Arkansas in 2021, and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2024. Laura Camila Medina (b. 1995, Bogotá, Colombia) is an interdisciplinary artist. Her practice is deeply inspired by the kisses between mountains and sky of her birthplace intertwined with the thematic fantasy-scape and migrant microcosms of Orlando, Florida.

Laura Camila Medina received an AA in Studio Art from Valencia College in 2015, a BFA in Painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2018, an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2024.
