Chi Tien Lin Cheng: Journey Into Love

November 23–December 29, 2024

Gallery I | SPURS Gallery, D-06, 2 Jiuxianqiao RD.N, Chaoyang, Beijing

SPURS Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Chi Tien Lin Cheng’s solo exhibition, “Journey Into Love,” on November 23, 2024. As Cheng’s debut at the gallery, the exhibition features 15 recent paintings and drawings created by the artist from 2022 to 2024.

The theme “Journey Into Love” stems from a concept that Cheng has deeply contemplated in both his creative practice and his life: “It is love that gives rise to all beings in this world; it is the mind that stimulates all phenomena in the universe.” The artist describes, “Once life develops a heart capable of love, it enters the infinite possibilities of love, shapeshifted to become a sentient being in the sentient world, hence to be amongst blessing, devotion, selflessness, mercy, serenity, peace, happiness, beauty, and illumination. Yet it is also confronted by selfishness, greed, ignorance, hatred, agony, discord, impurity, confliction, and suffering. Love can be a euphoric, romantic comedy or an absurd, grotesque tragedy. Love is the root of all beings to be constrained; and love is also the termination for all to be liberated from the duality of beginnings and ends, birth and death, being and void, grasping and dispersing. Love may evoke hatred, and hatred can arouse love, weaving an endless loop of cyclical interplay between joyfulness and sufferings all in the name of love.”

In this new body of works, the artist portrays scenes of sentient beings, capturing the complex phenomena that derive from the notion of love—a man leaping off a cliff only to sacrifice himself to the starving tigress and her cubs; a woman bowing down to feed small animals; a man meditating on the transient nature of life under a tree; a man walking amidst the forest on the quest for knowledge; a mother cradling a newborn baby; musicians playing and harmonizing their new encounters; lovers waltzing to embrace each other in a dream; a bird startled at night by the moonrise over the mountains; figures praying for goodness; and a girl experiencing adolescence curious about the taste of love. These evocative yet ambiguous compositions blend together humans and nature, depicting interdependence and the ceaseless flux of existence, resembling the fluid, flaming, lush, and blooming, highlighting the interconnectedness and impermanence of the phenomenal world.

Entering the gallery, viewers are guided to first pass through a screen wall, symbolizing the necessity of confronting life’s chaos, uncertainties, and pressures before discovering the boundless compassion of love that unfolds within the space.

“Journey Into Love” reflects Cheng’s meditative inquiry into human nature, the eternal struggle between good and evil, and his belief in love as the fundamental force driving existence. This exhibition invites viewers to embark on an introspective journey, exploring the transformative and transcendent power of love.

The exhibition remains on view in Gallery I until December 29, 2024.

上”,马刺画廊,北京(2023);“隔岸观火”,Linseed Project,上海(2021);“Postcards at Hellvi Kännungs”,Galleri Magnus Karlsson,哥得兰岛(2021);“Deep Cut”,The Asylum Chapel Maverick Projects,伦敦(2021);“Pith of the Pithless”,The Crypt Gallery,伦敦(2020);“一象异相”,无空间,线上展(2020);“Transience”,切尔西艺术学院,伦敦(2019);“Being and Becoming”,off-site project,伦敦(2019)。

Chi Tien Lin Cheng (b. 1996, Taiwan) lives and works in Sanyi, Taiwan. He holds a BA(Hons) Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art, London.

Cheng regards painting as a philosophical visual expression born from the process of reflection on the self, society, and all existence. By observing the tangible objects and the intangible emotions and spirit in daily life, he integrates these insights into his work, expressing a subjective understanding of the subtle Daoist nature of the universe.

This reflective theme instills in him a deep sense of reverence and aspiration toward the wisdom of ancient sages. The artist continuously layers, destroys, dissolves, and blurs the paint, dancing with spontaneity and chance in the process of “breaking” and “building”, exploring the narrative potential within boundaries and contours. Cheng uses allegorical and symbolic storytelling techniques to express his understanding and reinterpretation of religious, literary, and artistic references throughout history, seeking to explore the value and possibilities of painting in contemporary society.

Cheng’s recent solo and two-person exhibitions include “Journey Into Love,” SPURS Gallery, Beijing (2024); “The Wheel of Time,” Linseed Project, Lyceum Theatre, Shanghai (2022); “Embodied Light,” two-person show with Yi To, Wilder Gallery, London (2021).
