杰茜·梅金森：异境秘旅

马刺画廊荣幸地宣布将于2024年10月12日推出英国艺术家杰茜·梅金森在画廊的首次个展“异境秘旅”，这也是她的作品在中国的首次展出。
梅金森的作品以强烈的华丽风格统领其画中的人物与环境，巨细靡遗地描绘着这些环扣在一起的女性或者雌雄同体的半人角色，以及如表演舞台般的公共空间。青草女巫、穿着喇叭裤型的绒毛外装的人物、鹿女与全身水滴图样的角色等等，她/他们以各种生动的肢体动作展露身体，但是神态凝练、优雅而又警惕。梅金森作品中的半人角色散发的怪诞魅力来自于华服与裸体、自然与矫揉造作之间的张力。与过往不同的是，在此次“异境秘旅”展出的新系列的作品中，这些“人物”反复在不同绘画中出现，开始构建属于他们的世界，逐渐展开其有冒险精神的流动的叙事结构。
在梅金森的绘画作品创造的维度中，这些角色不仅是仪式的执行者，更是颠覆常规的策划者与主导者，她/他们拥抱着、密谋着。作为艺术世界的叛逆者，这些角色展现出一种既危险又吸引人的特质。梅金森的艺术创作一直以来拒绝被单一来源所定义，她的灵感汲取自跨越时代的丰富素材——从科幻小说到古代多神信仰，从当代作家韩江的《素食者》到源远流长的英国民间传说。梅金森构建的这个充满奇幻力量的超现实世界将各种叙事方式融合。层层叠叠的想象形成了丰富的社会性场景，也似乎同时将复杂人性抽丝剥茧，如狂欢后绵延不绝的梦，长久萦绕于人心。

Jessie Makinson: Sting to Your Bow

SPURS Gallery proudly presents “Sting to Your Bow,” the solo exhibition of British artist Jessie Makinson, on October 12, 2024. This is the artist’s first show with the gallery as well as her debut in China.
Makinson’s work is characterized by a strong luxuriant style that dominates the figures and scenes of her paintings. With exquisite detail, she depicts female or androgynous half-humans, staged within theatrical settings. A grass witch, a flared furry figure, a deer woman and a water-beaded figure, extend their limbs and display their bodies. Contrasted by expressions both contained, elegant, and vigilant. The grotesque charisma of Makinson’s half-humans is born from the tensions arising between finery and nudity, nature and pretense. In a development from her past works, some of the “characters” reappear throughout the tableaux of “Sting to Your Bow,” thus initiating a world-building journey of their own and unraveling a fluid narrative filled with adventurous spectacles.
In the world of Makinson’s paintings, her characters are not only the practitioners of secret rituals, but they plan and conspire, embracing as they subvert conventions. Rebellious, these characters unleash a dangerous yet alluring quality. The artistic practice of Makinson refuses to be derived from a single source of inspiration. She draws from a vast array of material that transcends generations — from sci-fi to ancient pagan histories, from contemporary author Han Kang’s The Vegetarian to age-old British folklore. Her surreal world brims with fantastical power, melding multiple means of storytelling. Layers of fantasy build the rich relationships of her imagined societies, whilst attempting to deconstruct the complexity of being human. Like an enduring dream after a feverish night, it keeps the heart captive in reminiscence.
The show will be on view until November 17, 2024.

杰茜·梅金森，1985年出生于英国伦敦，2004年毕业于英国伦敦坎伯韦尔艺术学院，2007年毕业于英国爱丁堡艺术学院，2013年完成英国伦敦皇家绘画学校研究生项目，2016年完成英国伦敦Turps Banana工作室项目，现生活和工作于英国伦敦。

Jessie Makinson (b. 1985, London, UK) lives and works in London.
