Town Hall Station, City Square, Metro Tunnel Project, Melbourne, Australia
How do we design five new stations to connect across a thriving historic city? Watch Hassell Principal Mark Loughnan as he reveals the concept behind Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel stations.
Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel Project on Wurundjeri and Bunurong Country will provide five new stations to connect the people and fabric of the city. Each station is specific and respectful to its place and its public setting and seeks to celebrate the joy and efficiency of travel via an experience that is recognisable, authentically Melbourne and remembered globally.
Open Metro is a philosophy and a reality we’ve tried to inject into all the stations within the project. An Open Metro is a proposition to connect three different parts of the city. It’s also about ensuring natural daylight, fresh air, weather protection and a very generous, open space.
“The five new stations are public, civic buildings. They’re a real contribution to the city. It’s really important people feel a sense of joy when they move through these stations.”
— Mark Loughnan, Principal
