Hassell has been appointed as the winner of the design of four service buildings that will enable the operation of the Shanghai Chongming Metro Line, awarded as part of an international design competition. The metro line is located in an important strategic area for Shanghai’s future sustainable development.

In May 2023, Shanghai launched a special initiative to enhance the quality of urban infrastructure in the Chongming area to improve its liveability. As part of this, the Chongming Line project organised an international competition for the conceptual design of three interchange shafts and two depots. Hassell was invited to this competition because of our extensive experience in urban transportation projects both in China and around the world.

"We used a regenerative design approach for the Chongming Metro Line projects, focusing on ecological restoration and reducing the project's embodied carbon.”
Chong Wang, Hassell Shanghai Managing Principal
“This will set a benchmark for future infrastructure development in Shanghai and across China. It’s an opportunity to push the boundaries of infrastructure and better serve the wider community,” Chong said.

Chongming, located at the northernmost part of Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River, includes Chongming Island, Changxing Island and Hengsha Island. Covering nearly one-fifth of Shanghai's land area, it supports about one-fourth of the ctiy’s forests, one-third of its basic farmland and two major core water sources.
After visiting and analysing the sites included in the design competition, our team identified a number of key issues that our winning conceptual design addresses: indistinct site features, singular functions, isolation from the surrounding environment, limited impact on future regional development. Our team developed a strategic guide for the overall approach to address the current issues, covering cultural identity, community engagement, regenerative potential and strategic future. Our architecture and landscape teams worked in collaboration with the aim to create a new generation of infrastructure development, setting a benchmark for the industry.

Infrastructure service buildings often have a detrimental impact on their environment, but instead our team seeks to design buildings that positively contribute to their surroundings.
"We don’t just see this as an infrastructure project, these are city-shaping opportunities. High-quality development demands innovative and considered design solutions with regenerative place-making at the heart of the process. Our design proposal carefully weaves together the characteristics of the site and needs of future users, transforming traditional infrastructure into buildings and places that can be loved and enjoyed by people for years to come," said Zoey Chen, Senior Associate, Hassell.
