Shenzhen Longgang River Blueway won the National Award of Excellence in the International category. The jury praised its community focus, sustainability outcomes, and innovative approach to regional economic revitalisation.

Hassell and UPDIS, together with ecology engineering designers E2Designlab, were selected as the winner of an international design competition organised by the Water Authority of Shenzhen in 2020, among a strong selection of international contenders. Early 2023, Phase I of the project opened to the public. The area is 4.6 km long and includes two major sections designed by Hassell with UPDIS titled U-dream Valley and Dragon Waterfront.

“The opening of the public space of Longgang River not only adds functions for people living in the city but also reconnects an important corridor with the city, becoming its green artery and revitalising it. By re-discovering and enabling the re-emergence of the originally beautiful elements of the city, we are helping the community create a sense of belonging and ownership of the place,” said Michelle Zhu, Hassell Principal.
“The naturally regenerative approach to designing the Longgang River is a powerful driver for the next phase of urban development in the wider area and we are honoured by this award recognition for our work on the project,” said Michelle.
Two other projects took out awards at the AILA Awards - the masterplan for the Sunshine Coast Ecological Park received a National accolade in the Landscape Planning category. The jury recognised the innovation behind our strategy, which involved transforming 65 hectares of farmland into a lush ecological haven.
Perth Zoo Playground was awarded in the Play Spaces category. This bold, inclusive design supports the Zoo’s conservation efforts while addressing the site’s complex landscape.
A huge congratulations to our clients, our collaborators and design teams.
