The results for the Sanchagang Port Green Space international competition in Pudong, Shanghai have been announced and we are pleased to share that Hassell is the winner. Our practice is the lead party in a consortium with the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University.
Sanchagang Port is known as the ‘Gateway of Shanghai’ and our scope of work on the project is the landscape planning and design. The site is wedge-shaped and covers 6.6 square kilometres, sitting at the intersection of the Yangtze, Huangpu and Wusong Rivers.
Addressing future climate challenges with a sustainable approach, our design is based on the vision of creating a ‘Dynamic Pujiang - Resilient Habitat’, with zero carbon as a starting point. The project incorporates multifunctional green infrastructure, blending landscape elements like springs, ports, bridges, and mountains with a modern energy tower to create a layered eco-network at the river-sea intersection.
Enhancing resilience and environmental adaptability, the project meets the needs of urban residents for a vibrant and healthy lifestyle, providing publicly accessible natural and recreational spaces. The two banks will feature areas dedicated to cultural displays, climate change exhibitions and industrial art exhibits, creating a space rich in historical layers.
The competition’s expert reviewers praised the design for respecting the water systems and site context, successfully creating an ecologically recognisable foundation by preserving the ‘fingerprint’ water network and parts of the original surrounding villages. This approach helps to maintain local characteristics while providing design flexibility. Our design scheme concentrates all the buildings near urban areas, minimising the impact on natural zones, with services aligned along the riverbank to create vibrant public spaces for residents. The design achieves a balance of scale, reinforcing the area’s axial relationships and architectural coherence, which in turn creates a visually harmonious and unified space.
