Fortunate enough to be able to extend my stay in the beautiful corner room facing the National Portrait Gallery near Trafalgar Square and not long into the unexpected isolation I found myself photographing with my very smart phone the vibrant life I had been deprived of and that went on below my windows day and night with the statue of Edith Cavell watching, the British nurse who helped the wounded on both sides in World War I for which she was severly punished. She famously confirmed her believe in a larger ideal of humanity by saying on the day before her execution : "Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone”.

Artist Shi Jun,

Shi Jun's paper paintings come from the mottled cement floor of the studio and the visual experience when he goes out for a walk, such as the bark, floor tiles, walls eroded by the traces of time... The ambiguous lines created by nature are the source of inspiration for the artist.

The artist will take pictures of the ground with his mobile phone, start creating on the screen, draw a general feeling and then print it on watercolor paper, enlarge it and use acrylic, beeswax and other comprehensive materials for secondary creation, and experiment repeatedly until a satisfactory effect is adjusted. With this clever method, Shi Jun framed many patterns on the floor of the studio, and then borrowed the texture and hazy form of inkjet images in the paintings to create.

In these paintings, the texture of the ground is sometimes the background of the picture, and sometimes it becomes the skin of the characters. The uncertain interaction between the background and the foreground highlights the mysterious presence of these characters. What is more intriguing is the irregular colored lines and brushstrokes on the picture, which are sometimes rough, sometimes frivolous, and even surpass the characters to become the protagonist.

These steady and accurate lines are not the result of casual swaying, but the perception of the artist's ten years of hard work. The completeness of a work does not lie in being comprehensive or meticulously crafted, but in the inadvertent "meaning beyond words" and the abrupt end.
