Professor Stokhof is emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, where he is affiliated with the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC).
Currently he is Jin Yuelin Professor of Logic at Tsinghua University. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Professor Stokhof was Vice President of the European Research Foundation, and Chairman of the China Committee of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Netherlands Science Foundation.

内容简介
Wittgenstein's analyses of certainty and knowledge, as outlined in On Certainty (Blackwell, 1969), are extensively discussed in the philosophical literature on scepticism and have given rise to so-called ‘hinge epistemology’. In formal epistemology, however, his ideas have not yet gathered much attention. This is unfortunate since the concept of certainty is relevant for formal theories of knowledge and belief. In the talk we will first introduce the main elements of Wittgenstein's analyses and their motivation in an informal way, focussing on the constitutive nature of certainties and their holistic nature. In the second part of the talk we will present a first proposal for capturing these key elements in a formal model. We end with a discussion of some open problems and directions for future research.
