It takes a village to raise a child"。
Dear members, guests, and friends of the London Reading Club:
Good evening!
Autumn is a beautiful season, where "every leaf turns into a flower." Today, we gather here to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the London Reading Club, and we also extend our congratulations on the 65th anniversary of our motherland. May our country prosper and may the reading Club thrive.
Ten years ago today, on the morning of October 1, 2014, our first reading gathering was launched in a small meeting room on the second floor of Channing Library. As the founder and host of the first session, I underestimated everyone's enthusiasm for reading and never imagined that we could continue this journey for a decade. Over these ten years, we have held activities in seven different venues, successfully hosted 108 reading sessions, and never paused even during the pandemic. We have organized nearly 160 online discussions and shared almost 600 books both online and offline, with our membership growing from just a few dozen to nearly 300 today. Looking back, it seems like a natural progression, but those who know the journey understand that it has involved countless efforts and perseverance, along with many ups and downs. There were times when I thought about giving up... but thankfully, we persevered, and I feel deeply proud and honored by this remarkable achievement!
"It takes a village to raise a child." A reading Club that has lasted a decade cannot succeed without the support of the community. I would like to sincerely thank the Westminster Library, Charing Library, Guanghua Bookshop, European Times, and other institutions for their unwavering support over the years.
I must also thank every member who has served as a monthly host, facilitated discussions, or shared at our meetings. You are the guiding lights on our journey. I especially want to acknowledge my partners who have worked alongside me, contributing their ideas and efforts, particularly the current members of the club managing team. You are the backbone of London reading Club. Without you, I can't imagine how we could have reached this point or had this celebration today.
Reflecting on the past, I borrow the words of Hu Shih: "No effort is ever wasted. In places we cannot see, the seeds we have sown have already taken root, sprouted, blossomed, and borne fruit.” Looking to the future, we still need everyone's support. May we befriend each other through books, read widely, read well, and together we learn, together we grow!
Finally, I look forward to seeing you all at the 20th anniversary celebration of the London Reading Club!
Thank you!
