According to the Associated Press reported on August 25, Walmart recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the United States, which were found to contain inorganic arsenic levels that could be harmful to health.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an initial recall notice on Aug. 15 before classifying it as more urgent on the 23rd. This indicates that the product may temporarily cause adverse health consequences, but is unlikely to lead to serious or irreversible medical problems.

The recall involves 9,535 cases of Wheaties brand apple juice sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages voluntarily recalled the contaminated six-packs of 8-ounce (227 grams) bottles of apple juice after discovering levels of the chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards.

According to the FDA, inorganic arsenic is more toxic to humans than arsenic found in naturally occurring minerals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen.
