On August 9, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea proposed to expand food nutrition labeling to all processed foods. Main contents:
(1) Extend nutrition labeling to all processed foods. Nutrition labels, such as calories, sodium, sugar, fat and protein, currently only apply to 182 kinds of food, it is proposed to add: 30 kinds of food such as ice, chewing gum, tea, and expand the scope of application to 259 kinds of processed food;
(2) Expand the high caffeine content label, which previously applied only to liquid foods, to include solid foods using Guarana. From 2026 onwards, Guarana based foods with caffeine content greater than 0.15mg/kg will be required to carry a high caffeine warning label and total caffeine content;
(3) To expand the scope of sugar alcohol caution label, with sugar alcohol as the main raw material to expand the sugar alcohol content of more than 10% of the products, should clearly indicate the type and content of sugar alcohol, with a "sugar alcohol" logo, and display a warning statement near the material name mark line, and distinguish it from the background color;
(4) Frozen foods eaten alone, such as ice cream, do not meet the label requirements of "not refrozen after thawing".
