On August 21, 2024, the Saudi Arabian Food and Drug Administration (SADDA) issued a circular proposing to establish requirements for health and nutrition claims for food products, with a comment period ending on September 21, 2024, which include:
(1) Requirements covering permissible health and nutrition claims and their use on food labels, etc;
(2) Foods intended for infants and young children may not make nutrition or health claims unless those claims are accompanied by compliance with relevant product regulations;
(3) Claims such as "suitable for diabetics, gluten free or for special medical purposes" are not applicable to foods with special nutritional or medical uses;
(4) If a health or nutrition claim is made on a food label, the label must state the specific values of the ingredients of the food ingredient that are relevant to the nutrition claim;
(5) A list of claims that are not permitted in food, such as claims that not consuming a particular food may affect health, etc;
(6) A list of health and nutrition claims permitted in food, e.g. where substances or mixtures are added or used in food, all requirements for each substance or ingredient must be complied with, etc.
