The hotel had twelve floors.
At least, that’s what the sign in the lobby said.
But when Eric checked in late at night, the receptionist handed him a key with the number 1308 printed on it.
“There must be a mistake,” Eric said, frowning. “You only have twelve floors.”
The receptionist paused, then smiled. “You’re right, sir. Twelve floors for most guests.”
Eric hesitated. Most?
Before he could ask, the receptionist slid the key toward him and turned away. The conversation was over.
The elevator ride was silent except for the dull hum of the machinery. He pressed 13, half-expecting the button not to work.
But the elevator moved.
When the doors slid open, Eric stepped into a dimly lit hallway. The air was thick and stale, as if the floor hadn’t been used in years.
He walked toward Room 1308, the numbers engraved deeper than usual into the wooden door. The key fit too easily into the lock.
The door swung open without a sound.
Inside, the room was normal—a bed, a desk, a single window overlooking the city. But something felt wrong.
The walls seemed too close, the air too warm, as if the room was breathing.
And then he noticed the mirror.
It hung directly across from the bed, a little too large, a little too clean.
As Eric stared at his reflection, his stomach twisted.
His reflection wasn’t looking at him.
It was staring past him, over his shoulder.
Eric’s breath hitched. Slowly, he turned.
Nothing.
Just the empty room.
But when he turned back to the mirror—
His reflection was still looking behind him.
And then, in the mirror, something moved.
Not Eric. Not his reflection.
Something else.
A shadow unfolded itself from the darkness in the corner of the reflection, tall and thin, with fingers too long, a head tilted too far.
Eric whipped around—
The room was still empty.
He turned back to the mirror.
The thing was closer.
Eric bolted for the door, fumbling with the lock. The air grew thick, pressing against him like unseen hands.
Behind him, the whisper started.
“You shouldn’t have come here.”
The door burst open and Eric stumbled into the hallway. He didn’t look back.
The elevator was waiting. The moment he stepped inside, the doors slammed shut on their own.
When he reached the lobby, the receptionist looked up.
“Checking out so soon, sir?”
Eric couldn’t even form words. He just threw the key on the counter and rushed out into the cold night air.
As he turned back toward the hotel, his stomach dropped.
The building only had twelve floors.
And his window—the one in Room 1308—
Was still there.
Lit from within.
Something was still inside.
