It's nearly the end of the year, which means Beijing Subway Lines 3 and 12 should be opening soon – and some posts about the matter have piqued our interest.
Scrolling through Dianping this weekend, we stumbled across a bright post with the brown Line 12 sign and interior of the subway reading, more or less, “Line 12 is coming on Dec 28!” Curious – and cautiously excited – we went to WeChat to check the latest subway updates, only to find the same phrase as before: “opening within this year.”
The Dianping post in question
That being said, the Dianping post isn’t too far from the truth, but it's still a bit unclear. Transport expert David Feng tells the Beijinger that, if we base the coming openings on those for previous years, then “within this year” will mean anytime from Dec 28-31.
Even though progress has been slow, with the opening being pushed further and further back, things are still shaping up nicely for both lines, with station entrances getting touched up (like those for Line 3 at Tuanjiehu Station in lead image) and station interiors cropping up on a few WeChat news accounts this week.

Both Line 3 and 12 have been the two most hotly anticipated lines coming this year, with the former’s phase 1 section connecting Dongba to Gongti and Sanlitun, and the latter connecting Dongba and Western Beijing to Tiantongyuan, Capital Airport Express, and other major points north of the 2nd Ring Road.
Will you be thrilled to see these lines finally open? Let us know in the comments!
