About Artist

Hi! I am Hyosun, a freelance illustrator currently living in South Korea. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Illustration, I have focused on editorial, publishing, and advertising projects. Some of my selected clients include The New York Times, Samsung Korea, and WePresent.

I find joy in creating characters with vibrant colors and fun stories, especially when people enjoy them. I draw inspiration from various people and animals I encounter, whether in the short or long term. I love observing their unique personalities, abstract auras, specific appearances, and personal stories.

I also enjoy visiting thrift shops because each piece of clothing has a unique design, which is something I aspire to achieve in my work. The patterns and distinctive designs I find there provide me with a lot of motivation to create.

Artwork Introduction

I want people to find the innocence of childhood in my work. When I see children experiencing their first moments and feeling their innocence, I share that same heart-beating excitement. I hope my work can evoke that feeling in others.

With a deep interest in people and animals, my artwork features many characters. I love drawing their diversity and conveying the message that every creature should be loved. No matter how unusual they appear or how different they are from the norm, they are all precious. My goal is to challenge typical beauty standards, as I believe there are many unique and beautiful things in the world.

Work-making Process

Every first touch starts with my doodles. I draw with my pencil without overthinking, as I love the spontaneity of unintended shapes and ideas. I then develop these doodles and add a story. That’s why I always carry my pencil and a little sketchbook—doodles can be popped up anywhere, anytime.

I work in both digital and watercolor mediums. For digital art, I scan my doodles onto my iPad, refine the lines, and add color. Many people ask if I use colored pencils or other traditional mediums, but I don’t. I’ve created a custom digital brush that looks like colored pencils.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with watercolors. This process is similar to my digital work, but instead of scanning my doodles, I reference them and then paint directly on a blank paper. I start making various face shapes first, then add hair and clothes.

G:What is your workflow of a day?

H:My working routine is flexible. I typically begin my day with personal activities like yoga and chores. After lunch, I doodle to activate my brain for the main work. Most of my creative work is done at night, but I try to go to bed before 1 a.m. to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

G:When did you get into art / What made you love art and keep making it?

H:My art journey began when I was little. I find it both cool and a gift to create something that conveys what I want to express. Drawing is the most enjoyable and confident way for me to share my ideas compared to any other activities.

G:Who is your favorite artist? Which painting or artwork inspires you most?

H:I greatly admire Georgia O'Keeffe's work and perspective. Her aesthetic, soft textures, and expressive approach to subjects deeply resonate with me. I also draw inspiration from my fellow illustrators, constantly amazed by their new works and passion.

G:Do you have any special habits / idiosyncrasies when creating?

H:I strive not to draw perfectly. I love drawing like a child, intentionally leaving some mistakes and imperfections. This approach helps me convey a friendly and pure vibe, reminding people of their own innocent feelings.

G:What difference between asian culture and western culture? How they inspire your creation.

H:I cannot speak for all Asian and Western cultures, but I believe New York, where I lived for over four years, has immense variety. There is no single standard for art and beauty, and just walking down the street provides me with a lot of  inspiration.

G:What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you see the world?

H:Art enriches, decorates, and brings joy to my life. Over time, I have come to realize that visual aesthetic elements play a crucial role in my daily routine. When I purchase something, I prioritize design over performance. One day, I dream of having a space filled with my preferred designs and aesthetic choices.

G:How would you define ‘beauty’? what is your option about ‘aesthetic’?

H:Beauty is in having your own unique taste and style, distinct from others. Being yourself is challenging, but once you discover your true self, you no longer compare yourself to others and gain confidence.

G:What is your source of inspiration? Experimental or Imaginative?

H:I believe that experiences fuel creative imagination. I think the more enjoyable experiences I have, the broader my range of imagination becomes.

G:What are the biggest challenges you have encountered in your creation?

H:Before I found my style, I started drawing only what I wanted to draw.

At that time, I started feeling the audiences can’t understand my work and thought something wrong because I realized I should keep communicating with people by art.

So, I began focusing on the connection between myself and my audiences, considering what they and I both enjoy.

G:Which artwork is your favorite? What does it mean to you?

H:These days I love vintage thrift clothes. I love their random and unique patterns. Besides, they are all one of a kind! So I get a lot of inspirations from

G:Have you ever tried some AIGC technology in your artworks? How your opinion about using AIGC into art creating.

H:I don’t have a plan to try AIGC yet because I believe in my sense of art and I still like to explore and experiment with art.

G:What’s your perspective of New Media Art?

H:New Media Art is unfamiliar to me, but as an artist who uses digital media, I find that it opens broader avenues for expression. Over time, there should be more approaches beyond traditional media to explore, making New Media Art a crucial element in artistic evolution.

G:Could you share your next step plan with us?

H:For the rest of this year, I plan to create many watercolor works. I am also gradually working on my children's book, aiming for a launch next year. In the near future, I hope to open my own offline shop—a combination of a cafe and thrift shop filled with my art items!
