A woman in Shangqiu, Henan Province, recently made headlines after posting a video revealing her decision to reject a reunion with her biological parents. The woman, now 37, was adopted as a baby and says she only acknowledges her adoptive family as her true relatives despite her biological parents leaving her a gift of 100,000 yuan in cash.
According to her video, she was adopted in 1987. At the age of nine, her adoptive mother passed away, leaving her to endure a difficult childhood, often living under the care of relatives. Later, with the help of her adoptive sister and brother-in-law, she completed her college education. Now married, she runs a successful livestock business with her husband.
Her biological parents, who live in the same city, reportedly tracked her down recently under the guise of purchasing mutton from her farm. They left her the cash in an attempt to reconcile. The woman, however, decided to meet them briefly to return the money and express her emotions about being abandoned. During the meeting, she knelt and bowed three times to her biological mother, expressing gratitude for giving her life but firmly stating she wished for no further contact.
In the video, she explained her reasoning: "For years, I have only recognized my adoptive family. My late parents and siblings mean everything to me. My sister and I depend on each other, and I don’t wish to establish any relationship with my biological parents. I hope they will not disturb my life again."
The emotional story sparked intense discussions online. Many netizens were moved by the woman’s integrity and independence. One user praised her: “Raising a child is far more important than giving birth to one. Her loyalty to her adoptive family is admirable.” Another commented, “Her gratitude to her adoptive family and determination to live life on her terms deserve respect.”
Others offered differing perspectives. “Her biological parents might have been forced to give her up due to harsh conditions in the 1980s, especially during the one-child policy era,” one user speculated. Another added, “Acknowledging one’s roots doesn’t erase the love for an adoptive family. A compromise might bring emotional closure.”
The woman later shared that the reunion had caused her significant emotional distress, even leading to hospitalization for stress-related illness. Despite this, her sister offered unwavering support, reassuring her, “Whether you choose to acknowledge them or not, I’ll stand by you. We’ll always have each other.”
