Shanghai’s iconic Peace Hotel has recently come under fire online after launching a ¥298 group-buy package. The package, which includes a slice of cake, a cup of coffee, and a museum tour, has drawn criticism for its perceived lack of value, with many questioning the steep price tag for such modest offerings.

The controversy began when a netizen posted a video criticizing the deal. According to the video, the package comprises a simple meal that must be taken to-go - patrons are not allowed to dine onsite. The post quickly went viral, with one commenter joking, “I paid just to feel inferior.” Another quipped, “Why not spend the money on something more worthwhile instead of this?”

A closer look at the package reveals it costs ¥298.01, rounded down to ¥298. It includes a guided tour of the hotel’s museum, public areas, and restaurant, valued at ¥0.01, along with a choice between two experiences: (1) a jazz-themed visit, which includes a cocktail and live jazz performance, or (2) a food-themed experience, featuring a slice of cake and coffee to-go. Despite the backlash, over 50 people have purchased the package so far.

The Peace Hotel, located on Shanghai’s Nanjing Road and boasting over a century of history, is renowned as a city landmark. Managed by Accor’s Fairmont brand, the hotel has previously introduced premium offerings tied to its legacy. For example, earlier this year, the hotel launched a "Blossoms" set menu inspired by a popular TV adaptation of Jin Yucheng’s novel. Priced at ¥1,702 for two after service fees, it sold out daily, sparking debates over affordability and exclusivity.

Public reaction to the ¥298 package has been mixed. While some mocked the deal, others noted the experience includes more than just food. “It’s not just about the cake and coffee - there’s a guided tour as well,” a netizen pointed out. Others, however, argued the package lacks sincerity. “For a hotel with such a rich history, this doesn’t match the price or consumer expectations,” a comment read.
