A marriage scam involving a woman, her boyfriend, and two accomplices was recently uncovered in Guizhou, leading to the sentencing of four individuals for fraud.
The elaborate plot began in January when a woman named Xiao Bear (小熊) and her boyfriend Xiao Li (小李) conspired with two other accomplices to commit marriage fraud. Their scheme involved finding a man to marry, receive a substantial bride price, and then quickly divorce through a deliberately engineered infidelity trap.
According to court documents, the group planned to introduce the unsuspecting husband to situations involving drinking and soliciting prostitutes, which would provide grounds for an immediate divorce while allowing Xiao Bear to keep the bride price.
Through a marriage introduction agency, Xiao Bear was matched with a man named Xiao Bao (小鲍). On January 8th, they registered their marriage, with Xiao Bao and his family paying a bride price of 136,666 yuan (approximately $19,000). Of this amount, 36,666 yuan was distributed as "intermediary fees" among the conspirators, while the remaining 100,000 yuan was used to settle the couple's shared debts.
The scheme began to unravel when Xiao Bao became suspicious of his new wife's unusual behavior. Xiao Bear consistently avoided living together or spending time with him. During their brief marriage, she even convinced Xiao Bao to purchase expensive gold jewelry worth 47,970 yuan.
After Xiao Bao reported his suspicions to the police, the entire fraudulent operation was exposed. The conspirators admitted to their plan, with Xiao Bear stating that she was initially afraid but was reassured by her accomplices that they could help her divorce without returning the bride price.
In a recent court hearing in Longli County, Guizhou Province, the four defendants – Xiao Bear, Xiao Zhou, Xiao Song, and Xiao Li – were found guilty of fraud. They were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to three and a half years, accompanied by fines between 20,000 and 30,000 yuan. The court also ordered them to repay the victim's losses.
