China has reported a significant increase in the issuance of port visas, with 846,000 visas granted in the first seven months of 2024. Such a figure marks a notable 183 percent rise compared to last year.

According to China’s National Immigration Administration, during the same period, a total of 17.25 million foreign nationals entered the country, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 130 percent, VisaGuide.World reports.

The increase in port visas has been particularly evident as travelers benefit from the simplified entry process. The peak season during the National Day holiday saw a significant increase in arrivals, further proving the growing trend.

China Plans to Double Visa-Free Stay Duration

In this regard, the government-backed China Tourism Academy issued a report on September 11, proposing that the maximum duration for visa-free stays be extended from 15 to 30 days.

Additionally, the academy suggested allowing visa-free transit foreigners to enter and exit different cities within the country, increasing travel flexibility, South China Morning Post explains.

Travelers interested in port visas can apply in advance through local public security offices, provided they present an invitation letter from a local entity, such as a travel agency.

For those entering through border points from Hong Kong or Macau, visas can be obtained on arrival without needing an invitation letter, making it easier for visitors from more developed countries.

Granting port visas reduces regulatory obstacles to international travel and makes China more accessible to foreign tourists.

Port visa services are available at 99 locations in 73 cities that experience a high volume of international flights and significant foreign visitor traffic. However, these visas are currently limited to groups of at least two people, who must arrive and depart together. There is also some “uncertainty” surrounding the process, as visa applications can only be initiated 15 days before the intended travel date.

Citizens of 4 EU Nations Gain Easier Access to China

A report from Trip.com, China’s largest travel platform, revealed that this week, foreign travelers are expected to flock to China on port visas, with inbound tourism projected to surpass outbound travel. These data also show a 60 percent surge in inbound bookings for the National Day break compared to last year.

International airlines are also ramping up their operations, with increased flight frequency to China on September 30, as noted by industry data platform OAG Aviation. The three largest Chinese carriers are witnessing significant growth in their routes.

Last month, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that citizens of Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus and Denmark will have their visa requirements waived from October 15 through the end of next year. This expansion brings the total number of visa-free countries to over 40, with nearly half added within the past year.
