On July 8, 2024, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) published a Safety Assessment Report on "Probiotics" in Food Supplements to assist industry in assessing the safety of active microorganisms in food supplements.
The term "probiotic" is not currently approved for use in health claims under EU law and is not permitted to be used in the labeling of food or food supplement products. The term "probiotic" is widely used in the relevant industry and scientific community. While found that few adverse events related to probiotics were notified, FSAI is particularly concerned about associated infectious diseases, including bacteremia, sepsis, and endocarditis in persons at physiological risk. FSAI recommends that safety assessment criteria and relevant evidence provided by dietary supplement producers should be used to demonstrate the safety of microorganisms in products.
