Recently, the 2024 Forum on High-Quality Development of Human Sperm Banks was held in Guangzhou. Experts from human sperm banks across China gathered to discuss topics such as male reproductive health and fertility preservation.

The forum revealed that the qualification rate of sperm donors at some human sperm banks in China is only 20%, with certain regions seeing rates drop below 15%. Reproductive medicine experts emphasized that male age negatively correlates with semen quality, with sperm quality peaking between the ages of 25 and 35, considered the optimal time for reproduction.

Sperm Quality Declines After Age 35

"Traditionally, society has focused more on women’s optimal reproductive age, but men also have one," stated Zhang Xinzong, Deputy Director of the Guangdong Reproductive Hospital and Director of the Guangdong Human Sperm Bank, during the forum. Zhang called for greater awareness of men’s optimal reproductive age.

According to the China Population Census Yearbook - 2020, the average age of first marriage for men in China is now 29.4 years. Additionally, the proportion of men over 35 having their first child has significantly increased. Zhang explained that male age is negatively correlated with semen volume, total sperm count, and sperm motility. Men between 25 and 35 years old exhibit higher semen concentration, stronger motility, and greater success rates for conception. After age 35, semen volume, total sperm count, and sperm motility begin to decline.

Zhang also noted that as men age, the likelihood of their offspring experiencing reproductive defects or health issues increases. For example, children of older fathers are at higher risk for conditions such as autism and schizophrenia. Additionally, advanced paternal age increases sperm DNA fragmentation rates, which can lead to abnormal embryo development and a higher risk of miscarriage.

"In terms of reproduction, age 40 is a critical risk threshold for men," Zhang stated.
