THE ANTONINE WALL
ROME'S FINAL FRONTIER
This gallery explores the biography of one of the most important cultural monuments in Scotland and Europe which has produced some of the most spectacalas artifacts from Roman Britain. The emblage of carved and inscribed sculpture alone, as represented by the ornate Antonine Wall rance slabs, is unique to the Roman province. Through The Hunterlan's rich collections the gallery investigates four key themes:
the bullding of the Wall - its architecture and impact on the landscape ie role of the Roman army on the frontier - the life and lifestyle of its soldiers
The cultural interaction berween Roman and indigenous peoples, and evidence for local resistance
The abandonment of the Wall and the story of its rediscovery over the last 350 years
The Antonine Wall: Rome's Final Frontier also reflects the story of over three centuries of collecting and rescarch by the University of Glasgow on what is now a World Heritage Sire.
