PhD position in Roman History and Archaeology (Groningen)
Applications are invited for a fully-funded four-year PhD position in the field of Roman History and Archaeology. The envisioned project focuses on wealth concentration and political integration of the provincial elites in the Roman Empire.
Recent research suggests that the elites from a few particular provinces were preferentially integrated into the top political networks of the Roman Empire (the senate at Rome). There is a clear relationship between access to these political networks and the accumulation of large personal wealth. This PhD project explores the broader socio-economic context in which these elites were accumulating the required capital for entry into the Roman senate. The core of the project constitutes a comparison of the socio-economic background of elite wealth accumulation in two Roman provinces: the politically well-integrated province Hispania Baetica and the politically less-integrated province Hispania Tarraconensis. For these two provinces, the project investigates the level of regional economic integration (using for example settlement hierarchies and/or infrastructural networks) and the demographic/agricultural structure (using, for example, field survey or site excavation data). The project results will provide a detailed framework to understand the regional variation in wealth accumulation and political participation across the Roman empire. A more elaborate description of the project framework is available upon request (see contact details below).

Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme | Funding | Irish Research Council.
As in previous years, the School of Histories and Humanities has set a compulsory internal School check deadline for both postgraduate and postdoctoral applications. This deadline is Thursday 3 October at 16:00 Irish time (a week before the candidate deadline).
Applicants must save a pre-final draft of their online application in pdf format and send it as an email attachment, copying their supervisor/mentor whose feedback the application needs already to have incorporated (see below). Postgraduate applicants, please send this to the Director of Postgraduate Teaching and Learning, Dr Rachel Moss, at rmoss@tcd.ie. Postdoctoral applicants, please send it to the Director of Research, Professor Lindsey Earner-Byrne at lindsey.earner@tcd.ie
Please name the file in the format ‘YourNameIRC2025’. The School will check your application and confirm that you have School endorsement to continue to submit to the IRC.
The School check is compulsory. The Head of School will not endorse applications that have not been submitted to the School for checking.
The School check is a check of your completed application: it does not offer applicants detailed constructive feedback on the contents of their application; it checks compliance with key IRC requirements only. Supervisors/mentors are best placed to help improve the project-specific and general contents of applications, and applicants are expected to incorporate the feedback of their prospective supervisor/mentor before submitting their application to the School.
School and Trinity Long Room Hub (TLRH) guidance documents for applicants, to be consulted in addition to the documentation provided by the IRC, are attached to this message. There will be no TLRH information session this year due to staff changeover.
Supervisors working with postgraduate applicants who are not current research students in the School must alert them that they must additionally apply for admission to the relevant PhD programme in the School at http://www.tcd.ie/courses/
postgraduate/research/schools/ historieshumanities by 17 October. PhD applications for September 2025 entry should be possible by that date; if not, we’ll advise. The application must be at least initiated in the online application system for school endorsement of the IRC application; supplementary documents, such as transcripts, can follow later.
