Retired Chinese swimmer Liu Xiang, 28, has sparked widespread debate on Chinese social media after defending her choice to wear revealing swimsuits in her posts. A gold medalist in the 50-meter backstroke at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and a former world record holder, Liu transitioned to a full-time blogger after retiring from the national team in 2022. With over 5.6 million followers on Douyin and 1.3 million on Weibo, Liu shares content focusing on travel, fashion, and swimming.

Liu faced criticism recently, with some labeling her a "soft-porn live-streamer" for posting videos in swimsuits. In a bold response on Weibo, she wrote: “Is there something wrong with my lifestyle? Should I wear a down jacket instead of a swimsuit while swimming? Swimming has been a part of my life since I was five years old. I love myself in swimwear and appreciate seeing other girls in swimwear, too. Am I doing anything wrong?"

She added, “If you ask whether I’ll keep posting swimsuit videos, my answer is: absolutely!”

The backlash mirrors controversies faced by other retired Chinese athletes. Former gymnast Wu Liufang, for instance, had her Douyin account temporarily banned for posting “thirst trap” videos but saw her follower count soar by millions after her ban was lifted.

Liu’s fans have largely come to her defense. One supporter commented, “Swimming isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life. I admire your confidence and determination.” Another wrote, “Critics of Liu must have negativity in their minds to view things this way.”

This is not the first time Liu has faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, she was criticized for gaining weight, particularly in her legs. Unbothered, Liu responded, “It’s healthy beauty. I embrace everything about myself. I’m the most beautiful one.”
