A student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has applied to change their gender information following gender reassignment surgery, stirring discussions on privacy and campus policies. The announcement was officially publicized by the Nursing School of Tongji Medical College, a department of HUST, from December 5 to December 20.
The public notice, bearing the school’s seal, disclosed the student’s name, major, class, and even the ID number. This level of detail has raised concerns among legal and privacy experts. According to Fu Jian, a well-known criminal defense lawyer and director of Henan Zejin Law Firm, personal details such as ID numbers and reasons for gender change are sensitive information. "Publicizing such details increases the risk of misuse or exposure of the student’s private data and could add psychological stress," Fu noted.
While the school likely made the announcement to ensure procedural transparency and allow for supervision by staff and students, privacy advocates argue for anonymization of sensitive data in such cases. Experts suggest schools should find a balance between maintaining transparency and protecting students' privacy.
When contacted by reporters, the office of Tongji Medical College confirmed the notice’s authenticity, stating it adhered to official procedures. However, the office refrained from clarifying the regulations that necessitated such detailed disclosure, citing a lack of authorization to speak further.
The announcement has sparked heated online debates. Some netizens expressed concerns about logistical challenges, such as whether the student would move into a female dormitory or use women’s restrooms. One comment read, “How will the university accommodate such changes? Their facilities might not be ready for this.”
Others criticized the school for exposing sensitive information. A user wrote, “Transparency is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of a student’s privacy.” Another pointed out the potential risks, saying, “Publicizing ID numbers is unnecessary and reckless.”
