A 19-year-old motorcycle influencer, known by her online alias "DJ Wan Xiaojv," tragically passed away in a road accident on December 2 in Sanya, Hainan Province.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:45 PM on a scenic coastal highway in Sanya. According to witnesses, her motorcycle, a high-performance BMW S1000RR, collided with a garbage truck. Video footage from the scene showed her motorcycle lying on the ground as medical personnel attempted to save her life. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital.
Wan Xiaojv, whose real name has not been disclosed, was set to celebrate her 20th birthday in just one week. Her family rushed to Sanya upon hearing the news, and her remains have since been taken to a local funeral home.
With over 14,000 followers on Douyin, Wan Xiaojv was part of a growing trend of “motorcycle influencers” in China, particularly young women who portray themselves as daring and independent. However, critics argue that many lack proper riding skills and safety awareness, relying instead on flashy stunts, provocative outfits, and dangerous behaviors to attract online attention.
Wan Xiaojv was no exception. Reports reveal she had only obtained her driver’s license in 2023 and had previously been fined for traffic violations. She often rode without wearing protective gear, opting for skinny jeans and casual clothing instead of proper riding attire. Her followers admired her "cool girl" image, but experts and enthusiasts alike have condemned her lack of regard for safety.
The tragedy sparked intense online discussions, with over 8,000 comments on platforms like Weibo and Douyin. While some mourned the loss of a young life, many criticized the growing phenomenon of influencers prioritizing fame over safety.
A netizen from Guangdong wrote, “I ride motorcycles too, but I never go over 60 km/h. Safety should always come first.” Another user expressed frustration, saying, “These influencers are tarnishing the reputation of real motorcycle enthusiasts. They use high-powered bikes as props without respecting the machine or understanding the risks.”
Others called for stricter regulations on motorcycle use. “There should be licensing tiers based on engine power and driving experience. New riders shouldn’t be allowed to operate such high-performance bikes,” commented one user.
However, some defended Wan Xiaojv, arguing that societal pressures and the allure of internet fame played a role in her decisions. “She was a product of the influencer economy, which glorifies risky behavior for clicks and views,” one user observed.
