U.S. Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, recently shared an intriguing anecdote during his trip to Guizhou Province, marking his first visit to the region. On social media, Burns introduced Jared Shelley, a student from Sacramento, California, who is currently the only American studying at Guizhou University.
Burns revealed, “We initially thought there were only 1,104 American students in China, but now we know there are 1,105. Thank you to Jared and Guizhou University for their warm hospitality.”
The revelation sparked discussions online, with many drawing comparisons to the significant number of Chinese students in the United States. Currently, over 300,000 Chinese students are enrolled in American universities, with some schools hosting thousands on a single campus.
A commentary accompanying Burns' post emphasized the imbalance in educational exchanges between the two nations. It suggested that increasing the number of American students studying in China is essential for fostering mutual understanding among younger generations.
The announcement generated lively debate among Chinese social media users. One commenter wrote, “Only 1,105 Americans in China? That’s such a small number compared to how many of our students go to the U.S.!”
Another user remarked, “Ambassador Burns is right to encourage more American students to study here. It’s crucial for them to see China firsthand instead of relying on stereotypes.”
Some expressed concern over the low number of American students, with one netizen noting, “China has so much to offer, yet we see such limited interest. Perhaps more scholarships or exchange programs would help attract students.”
Others took a more lighthearted approach. “Jared must feel like a celebrity at Guizhou University. Being the only American there is truly unique!”
