The Event

Studying abroad has long been considered an alternative to China's traditional college entrance exam (Gaokao). As China's economy has grown rapidly, it has become a more popular option for families with the resources and interest. Western higher education systems, particularly in the United States, are now the top choice for many Chinese students. Unlike two decades ago, when most students going abroad were pursuing graduate degrees, the rise in undergraduate Chinese students has reshaped American university demographics and profoundly impacted Chinese families and society.

However, is studying abroad truly a shortcut, or does it come with unknown challenges? What complex factors drive Chinese students to seek education abroad? As this group becomes younger, what are the experiences of those born in the 1990s and 2000s as they navigate foreign environments? What uncertainties and anxieties do they face? Ambitious and Anxious: How Chinese College Students Succeed and Struggle in American Higher Education (Sanlian Publishing House) by Professor Yingyi Ma from Syracuse University explores these questions in-depth, shedding light on this generation through detailed research and interviews.

On Ocotober 24, Professor Yingyi Ma will be joined by Chad Futrell from Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University and Yuan Yuan from the Counseling Office at A Level Center of RCF Experimental School for a discussion on the current state and challenges faced by Chinese students studying abroad.
