Carole Ann Penney

Career Strategist and Founder, Penney Leadership

Carole Ann Penney helps mission-driven leaders navigate their careers with purpose and resilience. As the Founder of Penney Leadership and a facilitator of Harvard Business Publishing’s global leadership development programs, Carole Ann guides professionals to uncover their authentic leadership style and create their own custom career path that aligns with who they are.

A seasoned coach, speaker, and writer, Carole Ann works with individuals and organizations across all sectors, industries, and roles. She has facilitated sessions for higher education institutions including Brown University and MIT, corporations including Hilton, American Express, and MetLife, and organizations including the New England Museum Association and the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network.

Carole Ann holds a B.A. in Education from Brown University and certifications in Nonprofit Management & Leadership from Tufts University and Professional Coaching from iPEC. She also mentors emerging leaders through Brown University's Women's Launch Pad, Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and the Institute for Nonprofit Practice. When she is not coaching, she’s developing the most important emerging leaders in her life—her two young daughters.

David Marchefka
Associate Director, Technical Development, Moderna


David has over 18 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry in the US and Europe. David’s technical expertise is broad and covers product development, scale-up, process characterization, bioprocessing unit operations, international tech transfer, process validation, CMC, and commercial manufacturing. In his present role, David is an Associate Director at Moderna. David designed and launched a Rotation Program; he also organizes global campus recruitment and hiring efforts within Technical Development. Through the Rotation Program, David mentors and supports the career development of future scientific and engineering leaders.  David has a MS degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a BS degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Business Administration from Northeastern University. 


In his spare time, David enjoys travel with his wife and 2 children and hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. He is an avid runner and has qualified for and completed the Boston Marathon the last 7 consecutive years. His current goals are to complete the World Marathon Majors and completing a marathon in all 50 US States.


Conor Sullivan

Associate Director, Talent Acquisition at Harbinger Health


“With over 10 years of experience in talent acquisition across staffing, biotech, and capital equipment, I bring a wealth of expertise with a solid scientific foundation, holding a Master's in Organic Chemistry from Montana State University and a Bachelor's in Chemistry from Boston College.
I currently lead the Talent Acquisition function at Harbinger Health where I focus on developing the company's talent acquisition and development strategy. My focus has been on enhancing hiring processes, implementing new recruitment tools, and ensuring competitive compensation and responsible offer management. This approach is underpinned by a commitment to rigor and transparency aligning with the company's goals and values.
Previously, at Dyno Therapeutics, I led the talent acquisition team, hiring over 100 employees and creating innovative hiring processes with the co-founding team. My career is driven by a passion for supporting leaders in science and technology to build effective teams. Recognized in the industry, I have been a speaker at the 2022 Gene Therapy for Rare Disorders Conference. I hold certifications in Scrum methodologies and executive coaching which shape my hiring philosophy and approach.”

Jie Li

Director, CMC, Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Dr. Li is the director of analytical development under Cell and Gene Therapies at Vertex Pharmaceutics, where she led Exa-cel Analytical development team for all Exa-cel analytical-related activities, including team building, lab operation, document management, technical transfer, data trending, BLA/MAA filing, interacting with FDA and response to HA questions to enable BLA/MAA approval. She has made significant contributions to the approval of CASGEVY (Exa-cel), which is the first approved therapy utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 in the world, a type of genome editing technology.
Prior to Vertex in Jan 2021, she worked at Rubius Therapeutics, she was the Third Scientist on the Startup stage of Rubius, responsible for building a team and developing red cell therapy (RCT) platform including upstream and downstream process development, and analytical development, technical transfer to CDMOs, managing vendors selection. During her time at Rubius, she built up her CMC expertise and successfully led multiple programs under different modalities to pre-IND, IND, PhI-II clinical trials.
Before joining Rubius in May 2015, Jie was post-doc in New York Blood Center, where she led the project of the mechanisms of epigenetic and molecular regulation from Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) to different lineage cells differentiation, specifically to red blood cells. She is professional in stem cell and red blood cell biology.

Wenyu Wang

Senior Scientist, Vertex Pharmaceuticals


Dr.Wang is currently a Senior Scientist in medicinal chemistry at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He has been working in small molecule drug discovery early research for 4 years which focuses on solving unmet medical needs by targeting its key underlying causal biologies using small molecules. Beyond this, his work also involves contract research organizations (CROs) management, high throughput screening, and chemical biology work for hits validation, etc.


Prior to Vertex, he conducted his post-doctoral training at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard working on DNA-encoded libraries, a powerful technology to search for small molecule binder toward target protein. He obtained his Ph.D in organic chemistry from Boston University in 2017 and B.S in Chemistry from Wuhan University in 2011.


In his part time, he currently serves as an executive committee member in the Lighthouse Mentorship Programs and SAPA-NE.


Yuki Weber, Ph.D.

Senior Scientist, Chroma Medicine
Dr. Weber is an analytical chemist with a diverse academic background spanning geoscience, biogeochemistry, and paleoclimatology. He earned his BSc and MSc at the University of Frankfurt (2006-2012) and completed a PhD at the University of Basel, Switzerland (2012-2017) where he received the Hydrobiology/Limnology award for his PhD thesis on lipid biomarkers in lake environments.
He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Harvard (2017-2019), and specialized in microbial lipidomics and stable isotope biogeochemistry. He then transitioned to industry, contributing to analytical development for mRNA vaccines and gene therapies at Greenlight Biosciences (2020-2021) and Beam Therapeutics (2021-2023), respectively. Currently, he is a Senior Scientist at Chroma Medicine, focusing on CMC analytical development for in-vivo epigenetic therapies.
Beyond science, he is an adventurous outdoor enthusiast, enjoying rock and ice climbing, alpinism, sailing, and snow sports. He also expresses his creativity through playing the guitar and drums. Combining professional excellence with a passion for life, he continues to make strides in both scientific and personal realms.

Caroline Mailloux

Senior Director, Corporate Strategy and DEI, Sarepta Therapeutics
Caroline Mailloux is an intrapreneur, equitable organization designer, and disability activist. She is passionate about leveraging the power and potential of people to co-create transformation and drive results across diverse stakeholders. She currently serves Sarepta Therapeutics as their founding head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She is a graduate of Brown University and has completed fellowships at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland and the Kennedy School at Harvard University. She resides in MA with her partner, two teens, two cats, and a dog. For fun, she enjoys the exploration of places and possibilities and is a board member at AS220 in Providence, RI.

Delai Chen

Director, Nanoparticle formulation, Beam Therapeutics
Dr.Chen is a pharmaceutical scientist with over 10 years of experience in the discovery, optimization, and characterization of drug delivery systems for vaccines and therapeutic applications. Delai values "useful science" and believes that progress in delivery technology is key to unlocking the therapeutic potential of genetic medicines. Currently serving as the Director of LNP Science at Beam Therapeutics, he and his team are dedicated to developing delivery technologies that enable in vivo base editing, with the vision of providing lifelong cures to patients suffering from serious diseases.

Delai holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of Chicago and a B.S. from Peking University. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, jogging, and occasional camping with his three young boys.

John Wang

Senior VP, Business Development, Simcere Pharmaceuticals
Dr. John Wang, currently the Senior Vice President of the Company, is responsible for driving the BD&L and corporate development strategy, ensuring high-quality execution with a focus in the U.S. market, aligning with the goal of expanding Simcere's pipeline and commercial capability.
He was previously the Associate Vice President, Head of External Innovation, Immunology for Eli Lilly, leading collaboration, licensing, and acquisition deals in immunology therapeutic areas. Before that, John worked at Merck and Sanofi in Business Development, with primary focus in search and evaluation, due diligence, and alliance management. Early in John’s career, he worked in a research capacity in neuroscience at Wyeth.
John received his Ph.D degree in Pharmacology from the University of London, St George’s Hospital Medical School, UK; He conducted his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine.
