Biography
Professor Xuemei Chen received her Bachelor’s degree from Peking University in 1988 and her Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1995. She then conducted postdoctoral research at California Institute of Technology. In 1999, she joined the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University as an Assistant Professor. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005 and received the Rutgers University Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research. In 2005, she moved to the University of California, Riverside, where she was promoted to Professor in 2009 and Distinguished Professor in 2013. In 2023, she was appointed as a Chair Professor at Peking University. She was awarded the Charles Albert Shull Award by the American Society of Plant Biologists in 2006, elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2011, and served as an HHMI-GBMF Investigator from 2012 to 2018. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2013. In 2016, she received the University Lecturer Award from the University of California, Riverside, the highest honor given annually for research excellence. In 2018, she received the Achievement Award from the Chinese American Engineers and Scientists Association of Southern California.
Research
Prof. Xuemei Chen's early research focused on the genetic regulatory mechanisms of plant flower morphology, revealing the involvement of proteins related to RNA metabolism in floral organ differentiation. Further investigation discovered that some of these proteins participate in small RNA metabolism and function. Consequently, the primary research focus shifted to the biosynthesis, degradation, and mechanisms of action of small RNAs.
The current main research directions are:
1. Mechanisms of intercellular transport of small RNAs and their role as signaling molecules in regulating plant responses to temperature changes.
2. Non-canonical capping modifications of RNA, including the addition, removal mechanisms, and molecular functions of NAD, FAD, and dpCoA caps.
3. Chloroplast development, gene expression, and RNA modifications.
