Herbie Hancock’s 1972 album Crossings marked a milestone in blending jazz, electronic, and experimental music. Part of his Mwandishi trilogy, it followed Mwandishi (1971) and peaked with Sextant (1973). This trilogy showcased Hancock and his sextet’s bold experiments in jazz improvisation and electronic sounds, representing a highly innovative phase in his career. Crossings was created with the Mwandishi band, featuring Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers. Gleeson, a pioneer in electronic music, significantly shaped the album‘s sound, bringing richer textures and a futuristic feel through extensive use of ARP and Moog synthesizers, which were groundbreaking in jazz. The album’s pioneering electronic style influenced future jazz fusion and opened new pathways in electronic music, inspiring many artists.

今天有位远道而来的客人,特意从宁夏跑来上海看Herbie Hancock的演出。顺带买一些盘。交谈过程中聊到同样是马上要来演出的Jaubi,于是便向他推荐了The Deconstructed Ego这张专辑。客人十分喜欢,高兴的跟着唱了起来,并交流了鼓谱是如何变成词谱的的故事。

说回Herbie,就不得不提到Head Hunter和Future Shock这两张专辑。无疑改变了当时音乐产业的游戏规则,甚至直到今天。

那么今日给大家分享Herbie的另一张专辑Maiden Voyage中的同名歌曲,也是他在Blue Note所发行的最后一张专辑。一同分享的还有Mr Juke多年后在Blue Note Re:imagined中发行的翻录版本。


Today we have a customer who came all the way from Ningxia. He came to Shanghai to see Herbie Hancock’s show and to buy some records on the way. Between our conversation, we talked about Jaubi, who is also coming to China soon, so we played The Deconstructed Ego album to him. Our customer liked it so much that he happily sang along and exchanged stories about how the drum sheet music became the lyric sheet music.

Back to Herbie, we have to mention the albums Head Hunter and Future Shock when it comes to him. Undoubtedly a game changer at the time, and even to this day have a profound impact.

So today I‘m sharing a song of the same name from Herbie’s other album Maiden Voyage, his last album on Blue Note. Along with it is Mr Juke‘s cover version released years later on Blue Note Re:imagined.
