A Chinese influencer with a massive following of over 40 million on social media, known by his online alias Qi Tiandao, has sparked widespread outrage after allegedly harassing a female tourist during a live stream in Sanya, Hainan Province. The incident, initially presented as spontaneous, has since been exposed as a premeditated act designed to attract attention.
On the evening of November 30, Qi Tiandao conducted a live outdoor broadcast in the bustling tourist hub of Sanya. During the stream, he was seen focusing the camera on a female tourist’s backside before borrowing a bamboo skewer, commonly used for grilling squid, and using it to poke the woman inappropriately. Clips of this incident quickly went viral online, igniting public outrage. Viewers condemned Qi’s actions as invasive and disrespectful, labeling them a blatant act of harassment. Although the woman’s detailed reaction was not captured, her evident discomfort was enough to fuel criticism.
However, the controversy deepened when the local police revealed that the entire incident had been staged. According to an official police statement released by the Sanya Public Security Bureau on December 4, Qi, whose real name is Meng Fanbin, had planned the act to boost his viewership. He hired the woman involved to participate in the performance, deliberately creating a sensational and vulgar scenario for his audience. The authorities have since detained Meng for ten days under administrative charges, citing the "extremely negative impact" his behavior has had on public order. The case remains under further investigation.
This is not Qi’s first brush with controversy. Before rising to fame as a live streamer, Meng served a three-year prison sentence for his involvement in a large-scale online fraud scheme. Between 2014 and 2017, Meng and his accomplices operated a network scam that posed as a recruitment agency, duping victims into paying for fake membership fees and training programs. Meng’s criminal record has often resurfaced during his streaming career, leading many to question his moral suitability as a public figure. Despite his checkered past, Qi managed to rebuild his online presence, attracting millions of followers and lucrative sponsorship deals.
Social media users have heavily criticized both Qi’s actions and the platforms that enable such behavior. "How can someone with such a massive platform act so irresponsibly?" one user commented. Another remarked, "This man is setting a terrible example for young viewers. He does not deserve to remain in the spotlight." Many have called for stricter penalties, including a permanent ban on his accounts, arguing that a 10-day detention and a 15-day live-streaming suspension are far too lenient for someone with such influence.
As Qi faces public backlash, his defiant attitude has only added fuel to the fire. In response to criticism, he reportedly declared, "I won’t bow to anyone, and I won’t back down." This statement has further enraged netizens, who view it as a sign of his arrogance and lack of remorse. Some have sarcastically challenged him to "prove his courage" by defying the law further, underscoring the public’s frustration with his antics.
