A recent forum on the high-quality development of human sperm banks was held in Guangzhou, gathering experts nationwide to discuss male reproductive health and fertility preservation. During the event, it was revealed that only about 20% of sperm donors in China meet the required standards, with some regions reporting acceptance rates as low as 15%.

Dr. Zhang Xinzong, Vice President of Guangdong Reproductive Hospital and Director of the Guangdong Sperm Bank, highlighted the decline in sperm quality with age. According to him, while much attention has traditionally focused on women’s optimal reproductive age, men also face fertility challenges as they age.

Zhang explained that sperm quality is at its peak between the ages of 25 and 35, making this the ideal time for fatherhood. After 35, sperm volume, count, and motility begin to decrease. Furthermore, the risk of genetic abnormalities in offspring rises, leading to potential issues like autism, schizophrenia, and developmental defects. "By 40, men face what can be considered a 'high-risk threshold' for reproduction," Zhang warned.

In addition to age, lifestyle factors and environmental conditions play a significant role in reducing sperm quality. Research shows a global decline in sperm concentration and motility over the past few decades, with sperm counts dropping by 40% and semen volume shrinking by over 20%.

These trends, according to Dr. Xiong Chengliang, former Chair of the Chinese Medical Association’s Family Planning Division, not only affect individual fertility but also pose broader challenges for population quality and societal development.

Data from human sperm banks underscore this issue. In 2010, approximately 40% of sperm donors were deemed qualified. Today, that figure has plummeted to around 20%, with some regions reporting rates below 15%. Experts at the forum emphasized the urgent need to raise public awareness about male reproductive health and to promote healthy lifestyles among men to combat these alarming trends.
