On September 10, AirAsia Philippines announced that it will cease all flights from Manila to the Chinese mainland this year due to weak demand.

According to AirAsia Philippines CEO Ricardo Isla, the company’s sales have not returned to pre-pandemic 2019 levels, particularly for flights from Manila to China, which have shown sluggish performance. “Transparently, by fourth quarter, no more China flights for us. At the end of the day, we have to also make sure that we are building profitability,” he said.

In June, AirAsia Philippines had already announced the suspension of its Manila-Shanghai and Manila-Guangzhou routes. Following this latest announcement, flights from Manila to Shenzhen will also be officially suspended in the fourth quarter.
