A woman from East China's Anhui province said she had been cheated by a stranger who disguised their personal WeChat account as the platform's file transfer assistant function for years, according to media reports.
WeChat users typically utilize "file transfer assistant" to easily exchange files between mobile and personal computer applications. The woman, who introduced herself as a movie blogger in the provincial capital of Hefei, said she had been doing so until recently.
She recounted her experience of unknowingly sending files containing private information to a stranger. The imposter had named their WeChat account "file transfer assistant" and employed an icon remarkably similar to the authentic one, as reported by the Shanghai-based news outlet paper.cn on Wednesday.
The woman only became aware of the deception when she noticed an unusual update from the suspicious account on her WeChat moments. Further investigation revealed that the account, which had added her in 2015, belonged to an individual in Shanghai.
Upon receiving complaints from the woman, Tencent, the developer of WeChat, took action by banning the fraudulent account, emphasizing that the use of such a username violated platform rules, according to customer service statements.
Local law enforcement announced their intention to examine the case, focusing on potential losses suffered by the woman, such as the unauthorized use of her personal files for loans, as highlighted in the report.
