The moderator of this salon was Huiliang Zhang, associate researcher and Ph.D. in education from the China Research Institute for Science Popularization. The speakers included Åshild Adsen, CEO of Trondheim Science Center; Yanjing Zhu, Director of Water Resources, Senior expert of LCA at the Beijing Representative Office of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute; Dr Hannah-Lee Chalk, Curator of Learning at the Manchester Museum.
Åshild Adsen presented a science center built on the remnants of a World War II bunker. This center integrates history with modern technology, striving to connect city dwellers with the intellectual community. It is not only a venue for displaying technology but also a vibrant hub where people of all ages can immerse themselves in the joy of creation and learning. Åshild expressed her aspiration that this project can inject new vitality into the city, facilitate the dissemination and sharing of knowledge, and truly achieve the integration of technology and the humanities.
Yanjing Zhu introduced Lifecycle Thinking (LCT) and its significant role in facilitating society's low-carbon transition. By taking into account the environmental, social, and economic repercussions of products throughout their entire lifecycle, LCT provides a theoretical foundation for sustainable development. Its applications include Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). LCA enhances people's understanding of products, whereas EPD facilitates decision-making and promotes green consumption. Since 2014, the international EPD system, under the management of IVL, has witnessed the EPD registration from about 50 countries around the world with over 10000 EPDs. Together, LCT and EPD have made far-reaching contributions to driving low-carbon transition.
Hannah-Lee Chalk
Dr. Hannah-Lee Chalk introduced an exhibition titled "Carbon Ruins" held at the Manchester Museum. This exhibition showcases changes from the 2020s to the 2050s, with a special invitation to students to participate in the process by selecting items that are currently considered unsustainable but will become museum exhibits in 2050. The planning process for the exhibition involved framing, imagining the future, and selecting the exhibits, ultimately leading to the selection of 12 items for physical exhibition. The initial feedback indicates that for the 100 visitors who were interviewed, they have provided positive evaluations of its informative content, while universally emphasizing the collective responsibility for change.
The online participants of this salon included members of Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals (BGNSF) from abroad as well as domestic science popularization professionals. The online attendees raised questions on topics of their concern, including how to attract the industrial sector to participate in science communication, how to ensure that the concepts of Lifecycle Thinking (LCT) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) are accurately conveyed to promote actions towards a low-carbon future, and the potential challenges that may be faced in implementing similar "Carbon Ruins" projects in other regions or museums. The three guests provided detailed answers to the audience's concerns, further enriching the depth and breadth of the discussion.
Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals (BGNSF) is a non-profit, professional international science communication network co-sponsored and voluntarily formed by dozens of influential science communication agencies across the world, under the initiative of Beijing Association for Science and Technology. Since its establishment in 2018, BGNSF has always been adhering to the principle of "communication, sharing, cooperation, and development" and has carried out extensive cooperation with scientific communication institutions around the world. Beijing Global Network of Science Festivals Online Salon aims to provide a platform for display and exchange among members of the BGNSF, domestic and foreign popular science institutions and organizations, and promote mutual understanding and resource sharing among them.
